Given the growing demand for power and spiraling import bill, expansion of the existing Hwange Power Plant has been identified as key to alleviate the energy shortfall. The existing plant is thermal in nature with a large part using coal as power inputs. Compared to Hydro fossil fuels are known to be high producers of emissions and impact surrounding environment. The proposed expansion will cost US$1.3 billion and will involve a construction of a further two generating units adding 600MW to the national grid. This project will be funded through an EPC contractor and Sino Hydro has been appointed the contractor.
